Newtec announces that it is launching the first professional modulator compatible with the ABS-S standard, China's new standard for direct-to-home broadcasting via satellite.
Newtec has developed the new modulator in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Broadcasting Science and Availink, Inc, who will be providing receiver chips for the set-top-boxes. "We chose to work with Newtec because we see this company as one of the leaders of SATCOM technologies and we have a long history of successful cooperation between our organisations", says Mr. Ma Ju, President of the Academy of Broadcasting Science at SARFT.
The new ABS-S (Advanced Broadcasting System - Satellite) standard is based on an advanced and very efficient modulation technology. Compared to DVB-S, the ABS-S standard can help broadcasters save up to 30% on their satellite bandwidth costs or reduce the size of the antenna necessary to receive the TV signals in the homes.
The new modulator has received the product number NTC/2278 and is part of the Azimuth family, a fully modular product range that also includes leading DVB-S, DVB-DSNG and DVB-S2 products well known for their performance and reliability.

First, the paper introduces a new generation satellite broadcasting system in China named Advanced Broadcasting System-Satellite (ABS-S) that offers system performance and service versatility suitable for future satellite digital broadcasting.
Meanwhile the new system utilizes fixed frame structure to realize the CCM, VCM and ACM working modes adopted by DVB-S2 system to further simplify the complexity of the implementation. Secondly, this paper points out the shortcomings of LDPC code used in DVB-S2 and detailedly describes the LDPC code used in ABS-S. Then, based on the simulation result, we can say that the performance of LDPC codes used in ABS-S is better than that of DVB-S2 and the complexity is also lower than that of DVB-S2. At last, we put forward a fast method to encode the QC-LDPC code used in ABS-S system.

The new Chinese satellite has a life expectancy of 15 years and will be able to broadcast to approximately 98 percent of the population of China, to include Hong Kong, Macao, as well as Taiwan. China Direct Broadcast Satellite is also planning to launch their Xinnuo-4 (Sinosat-4) and Xinnuo-6 (Sinosat-6) satellites by the year 2010.
